My husband and I are surprising our 6 year old by taking him to Disney for his b-day tomorrow. We’ve been in the car for 4+ hours and he still thinks we are on our way home from school. He keeps saying “looks like we’re almost home!” 😂

One overlooked thing that really sets the Lord of the Rings films apart from other franchises is how earnest they are-
Most movies are so afraid of being “cheesy” that whenever they say something like “friendship is the most powerful force in the world” they quickly undercut it with a joke to show We Don’t Really Believe That! ;) Even Disney films nowadays have the characters mock their own movie’s tropes (”if you start singing, I’m gonna throw up!”) It’s like winking at the camera: “See, audience? We know this is ridiculous! We’re in on the joke!”
But Lord of the Rings is just 12.5 hours of friendship and love being the most powerful forces in the world, played straight. Characters have conversations about how much their home and family and friends mean to them, how hope is eternal, how there is so much in the world that’s worth living for…. and the film doesn’t apologize for that. There’s no winking at the audience about How Cheesy and Silly All This Is; it’s just. Completely in earnest.
And when Lord of the Rings does “lean on the fourth wall” to talk about storytelling within the film, it’s never to make jokes about How Ridiculous These Storytelling Tropes are (the way most films do)…. but instead to talk about how valuable these stories can be. Like Sam’s Speech at the end of the Two Towers: the greatest stories are ones that give you something to believe in, give you hope, that help you see there are things in a bleak violent world that are worth living for
In light of the whole Melanie Martinez rape alligation, here are some artists to listen to instead of her:
- Kesha: her new album Rainbow is amazing and about ovecoming her producer sexually assalting her. She’s an unproblematic queen and her music is really chill and just has such good vibes
- Aly and Aj: your fave og disney queens are back and here to snatch your weaves. Their new album Ten years has some good fucking bops on it (like Take me) and they are honestly so nice and pure
- Billy Elish: she’s legit only 15 and her music is so fucking good. It has some similar vibes to Melanie’s music, but unlike Mel she’s not a fucking piece of trash :)
- Sam Smith: I personally didn’t dig their music when i first listened to it, but it’s really grown on me. They just seems like a genuine person to me.
- Marina and the Diamonds: Her music has some similar vibes to Melanie, but she’s not gross af. Electra Heart is probably my favorite album, in it she has a persona that isn’t a little kid who gets raped/kidnapped and has that glorified in a song
- litertally any other artists
- just don’t listen to Melanie anymore
- rapist shouldn’t be excused just cause u like their music
what really bothers me is that channing tatum may look like a thumb, but he’s a really cool dude. like, he’s openly bi and clearly is obsessed with his family and apparently loves fairies and there was that time he helped stan lee off stage bc he’s a gentleman and his favorite disney character is the sentient broom from fantasia and he’s been outspoken about gender equality and stuff and also his wife is hot as hell
but his fanbase is essentially like 40-60 year old women who are like ‘OOOOOOOH ABS MUSCLES DANCE LIL BITCH’ and it’s created this v specific image of channing tatum in the media when in reality his image should be giant fucken nerd in love w his amazing wife
